I linked
John Stroger Hospital of Cook County in that post you quoted. That's formerly Cook County Hospital, where the show ER was supposed to be based on. It's the public general hospital and remains one of the largest trauma and triage centers in the whole world. It's a world-class facility (I managed the subcontract for JHS under Walsh) and has everything from free dentistry all the way to neurology. Gastric Bypass, Lasik and all Opthalmology is available at the facility and is FREE for low-income patients. Always has been and always will be.
The State of Illinois runs about hundred such facilities with 3 major facilities in Chicago alone (Cook County, Provident and Oak Forest Hospital).... ALL are level-1 trauma centers providing FREE medical care for low-income patients.
All the states run similar facilities but the
VA remains the largest free healthcare system in the world and THAT isn't restricted for poor patients only. The VA also gives out free surgeries like Lasik eye surgery and there has even been an issue with the airforce wanting to cut down on lasik because of a shortage of support officers when candidates all became eligible to be aviators.
