I'm the opposite of Tad, I hate the Kojani starting area and I think starting there at release was one of the factors in making me quit the game after a couple of days. Something about the deliberately asian setting completely broke the immersion of a fantasy world for me, and even the more traditional areas on the continent (wood elf starting area for example) that are generally amazing to look at are still sprinkled with the odd asian influences and that just ruined it for me.

Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with asian architecture or culture, but I don't really see how it has a place in a game that isn't based around that history. I would rather have seen them create a new culture and unique architecture even if it had a minor asian influence. Just as a disclaimer though, I never saw Tsang's Tomb or anything during my time there, maybe that would've changed my experience a bit.

Thestra is the only place I've enjoyed starting out in. The quests are pretty basic, but still decently fun. More importantly, they flow well and are actually fairly easy to complete, unlike some other areas. You have a low level brownie dungeon you can hit probably as early as level 4, and by 10+ can go to the nearby Riftseeker's Torrent, which I found enjoyable.

Ultimately though, it depends on if you have anyone to talk to and run around with. It is possible to solo obviously, but the game doesn't really shine in that area. Maybe running a dungeon with some people that aren't retarded would show you the potential fun of VG.
