Have to unequip and reequip every so often. Pretty much everytime you level or gain attributes(every 20%), it can bug and you can have to reequip. It's pretty fucking annoying, and never happens with staves and shit.
As for jayrebb stuff, by easy I meant they're going to cap the dmg it does, and also changing the role of the spell so it's not the highest dps for those class, so you're not forced into using a spell that can kill yourself/put strain on healers. At least that's what I get from class leads info.
