Yes and no. The game has changed a lot since pre BC days. 1 nice evolution of the game is the massive amount of "casual" yet successful guilds there are these days. Like our guild was brought together last summer and raids at most 3 times a week, yet we have almost finished BT (Arch is down). Maybe its just a difference of server, but the ability to raid while retaining a real life is a nice balance.
Also.. there are like 09238904832 more things to do at max level which is a nice change. Pre BC raiding was about it for cap level activities.
