He wrote the stories during WWII (The trilogy part) as a followup to The Hobbit. And The Hobbit was first published in 1937, and apparently began in late 1920s which he claims began after scribbling something on a blank sheet while grading class papers. Be ironic if he plagiarized the idea heheh.
