Actually, Howards first literary works (the Solomon Kane stuff) were published in Weird Tales in 1928. Kull was introduced in WT in 1929. The Hobbit, regardless of when it was written, never reached the light of the public eye until 1937.

Semantics be damned, they were both incredible literary artists.
